I have noticed several people asking about how to prove you Native American Heritage .?
and several people have acted like it was a secret . First thing let me say if you are less than a 1/8 or 1/16 in some cases you can forget about the great benefit's you thought you had coming . If your father or mother are not enrolled and active members of a tribe you think you are kin to . Then contact the tribe .Get A DNA test and go from there . It's not going to change your life like some people think . One thing which people who keep making statements about the reservation in Oklahoma need to understand is there was never such a thing it was the Indian nation and it was on the red river settled by the union army capt, or col. ( I forgot what he was ) Named John Davidson Which my grandfather John F. Davidson was named after John Davidson .Which is where he was born and lived till he was 10 is what my father told us . My grandfather never said just a whole lot .Which was normal since it wasn't cool to be a Indian back then when he grew up Since Indians didn't become American's until 30's 0r 40's Which is funny since without the indians the English would have starved the first winter and we would all be Spanish . So maybe it worked out ? Who knows ? I think . But if you think your family once lived on the Indian nation . check the Dawes Rolls you can gain citizenship and then be eligible for funding through the Cherokee Nation and possibly other funding. Again, the key is to become enrolled. Tribes and Indian Education organizations are now working closely with colleges and universities to urge them to require proof of tribal enrollment for any person stating American Indian heritage for financial benefits. Good luck!
