In yugioh when I play a union monster as an equip then what happens?

I am a new player and just picked up the dragunity legion structure deck. If I were to equip a monster with another monster do I get +x +x where x is my equipments monsters attack and defense? I know these equipment monsters are treated as spells in the sense you can remove them with de spell and stuff like that but for card effects that say "for every face up monster on the battlefield you get....." do these monsters count or no
