To spend, or not to spend?

My boyfriend is verbally abusive. It's been escalating to the point where he pushed me today with his body. It's his birthday as well. I quite personally don't think he deserves anything out of me, and I was going to spend the money I saved for him on a video game for myself. Should I do it? To be fair, he's supposed to see a psychiatrist next week who will set up appropriate counseling for him. But I'm fed up now. He thinks I've ruined his birthday, when in my eyes, I just refuse to be treated like a piece of s**t and then spend money on that person.
